Why Do Some People Struggle Focusing?
Let’s talk a little bit about exactly what focus is, and where it comes from, and why it’s important for mental health.
Basically, our brains are constantly in a state of overload. Every single thing that happens needs to be interpreted by our brain. EVERYTHING!

There is an entire subconscious area of focus happening in the background that you just aren’t aware of.
Think about something as basic as breathing. Sometimes you focus on your breathing. However, whether you focus on it or not, your body will still breath.
This is an example of subconscious focus. The subconscious focus is basically a form of auto pilot that our bodies have. Subconscious focus may be one of the most important aspects of how we operate, because without it, we would all die.
Active (Endogenous) Focusing
Active focus, also known as endogenous focus, is simply focusing on something that you are actively trying to focus on.
For example, if you are playing a board game, you are actively focusing on what moves your opponents are doing. You are also focused on making the best decision for your own move.

According to the Association for Psychological Science, concentration levels may increase with age. For reference, here is a chart that lists the average attention span for children, in minutes, by age group:
2 years old: four to six minutes
4 years old: eight to 12 minutes
6 years old: 12 to 18 minutes
8 years old: 16 to 24 minutes
10 years old: 20 to 30 minutes
12 years old: 24 to 36 minutes
14 years old: 28 to 42 minutes
16 years old: 32 to 48 minutes
Keep in mind that this chart represents how long children are able to sit down and do an activity before becoming completely disengaged. This is not to be confused with an acute attention span, which is typically measured in seconds – roughly 8 seconds for adults to be exact.
Adults are left out of this study, because typically children struggle with mental clarity more than adults. It is widely understood that adults concentration levels can be much higher than children’s.
